It was a cold day in early June when Cogorno walked out onto a High Sierra lake still
frozen by El Nino, cut a hole in the ice, dropped in his fishing line and began waiting
for a fish to bite. He was there for almost an hour without even a nibble when Fuscoe
walked out onto the ice, cut a hole in the ice not too far from the old man and dropped in
his fishing line. It only took about a minute and WHAM! a big Alper's trout hit his hook
and the boy pulled in the fish.
Cogorno couldn't believe it but figured it was just luck. But, Fuscoe dropped in his
line and again within just a few minutes pulled in another one. This went on and on until
finally Cogorno couldn't take it any more since he hadn't caught a thing all this time. He
went to Fuscoe and said, "Pat, I've been here for over an hour without even a nibble.
You have been here only a few minutes and have caught about half a dozen fish! How do you
do it?"
Fuscoe responded, "Roo raf roo reep ra rums rrarm."
"What was that?" Cogorno asked.
Again Fuscoe responded, "Roo raf roo reep ra rums rarrm."
"Look," said Cogorno, "I'm a Duke Brother, but I can't understand a word
you are saying."
So Fuscoe spit a wad of wiggling goo into his hand and said, "You have to keep the
worms warm!"
This is absolutely true; I was there. - Randy Whitesides
graffiti
Bill this is too mucho. And Whitesides wishes he could keep worms in his mouth like me.
GC ps, the actual story on worms is a fact that upon arriving in Big Pine we would stop at
The Early Bird Tackle & story-telling store. And 'Early' (because we could never
remember his real name) would try to sell us his worms by dumping them out on his counter
top. Since we usually fueled our selves with several road cokes we would 'bait' ole Early
that no worms could be purchased unless they were tasted. And he would make faces at us
like we were looney; and we would keep baiting him that if he couldn't eat his worms that
no fish would either. And so like a cock fight Armstrong & Guss would jab with their
bodies seeing if they could get Early to make the first fatal body movement that could not
be withdrawn without concluding the inevitable task. It seemed like forever, I think I had
to go outside & water the horses, but upon returning each of the Bros & Early were
chomping down the worms, as to who made the move to put one of the protein buggers down
first seemed to be Armstrong, later he claimed executive privilege. Well the next year we
tasted them again with ole Early, he never forgot us each year when we walked in the door.
I don't think he ate that well normally and we certainly made him laugh at our method of
buying his worms. gc the con

I recently had the pleasure of reading a short story entitled "Stalking the
Red-Nosed Captain" by Max Shulman. This story relates the author's first time
experience with saltwater game fishing. The story concludes with a list of truths that had
become clear to him as a result of his experience.
- Fishing boats leak.
- Fishing boat captains drink.
- Any fish you lose is a marlin.
- Fishing was always better the day before you got there.
- Though deep-sea fishing is a very difficult sport, it can be mastered by any man or
woman with average strength and inherited money.
A quick review of these "truths" makes one wonder why more Delts are not
either fishing boat captains or deep-sea fisherpersons!

I have been told that if you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day.
If you teach a man to fish, he will drink beer for the rest of his life.

Re: Ron "Upfora Duke" Guss
Hopefully most if not all of us know that Ron is scheduled for elective heart surgery
on Tuesday, August 11th. to replace the cow valve he has been abusing for years with a
replacement valve. I understand from his wife Beverly that the recuperation time can
average two months for this procedure. Although we will all expect Ron to push for much
less down time than that, it will obviously be a rough few weeks for Ron and his family. I
am sure our support will be greatly appreciated. However I do not expect him to readily
admit it.

I called the hospital Wednesday afternoon to see if anyone could or would provide me
with an update on Ron. The nurse I spoke with informed me that hospital rules prevented
her from giving out information on the status of patients. She offered to connect me with
his room and when I questioned whether Ron was up to taking phone calls she
remarked:
"He has been running up and down the halls here, I can hardly get rid of him to get
my work done!"
I spoke with Guss briefly, he sounded great. He did admit that the nurses were warning
him to take it easy, the next day he could hit a wall from the effects of the surgery.
So far so good. I was able to get my deposit back on the coffin I reserved for him. (It
was beautiful, built in the shape of a trout). It looks like we will all have to wait a
little longer for the greatest wake in Delt history.
Depending on how his recovery progresses I am sure he would enjoy receiving cards, letters
and calls from The Brothers Delta.

Subject: Quick end-of-season fishing trip.
I made a quick trip to the middle fork of the King's river in Sequoia/King's Canyon
National Park last weekend. Although it snowed Thursday night and was below freezing
Friday night it was beautiful daytime weather for Friday and Saturday fishing.
Most of the middle fork is restricted to flies and artificial lures, catch and release
encouraged, with a two fish limit. It is a large and powerful river, even at this
relatively low water time of year. Fishing was slow and challenging but great fun. Mostly Rainbows and some Browns. No
planted fish in the King's.
It was a much needed chance to slow down and center myself before a lot of end-of-year
business travel and the usual Holiday madness. The many oak trees had changed to their
fall leaves of bright yellow and they were beautifully set against the dark green of the
surrounding pine forests. Although the wildlife was abundant and very active, there were
very few people in the area to contend with.
It was a great little escape! I hope this short note finds all of you both healthy and
content.

RESEARCH PROVES BEER CONTAINS FEMALE HORMONES
Yesterday British scientists revealed that new research has determined that beer contains
female hormones. In the intensive one-week study scientists fed 100 men 12
pints of beer and observed that 100% of them gained weight, talked excessively without
making sense, became emotional, couldn't drive, and refused to apologize when wrong. Due
to the conclusive nature of these results, the research team has cancelled any further testing.

Powder Puff tournament raises funds for local charity
by Laura Scott, Indiana Daily Student
A group is gathered in a huddle on a rainy Saturday afternoon, covered in mud and grass
stains, discussing its next play. The team breaks and takes the field for an old-fashioned game of pigskin.
No, it wasn't the men's football team preparing for its Big Ten opener. But nobody
could have told that to the ladies from sororities fighting in the Powder Puff tournament
championship game Saturday afternoon. Proceeds from the Delta Tau Delta charity event went to Middle Way House, a local
shelter for battered women and children.
Sophomore Chris Mohler, whose fraternity organized the event, said members of the
fraternity had been working since February to make sure the charity tournament was a
success. "I'm really happy with the way things turned out," he said. "It's a lot
bigger than last year and we've raised a lot more money than we did last year."
Mohler estimated about 400 people came to play and support the 15 teams that took the
field. And with entry fees, corporate sponsorships, T-shirt sales and alumni matching
donations, he anticipated earning a total of about $2,000 for the shelter.
Freshman Danielle McConnell said one of the highlights was playing another team from
her house. "It was great because we knew them all, and we could get really rough," she
said just before playing in the final game of the losers' bracket. "We just have to
be able to do that in this game."
The mud and the cold helped make it more authentic, Mohler said. "A lot of the girls were really loving the fact that it was so muddy out," he
said. "They loved rolling around in it and getting so dirty."
Brothers from Delta Tau Delta volunteered as team coaches to help design the plays and
cheer the ladies on to victory. Sophomore Andy Balliet said he started working with his team "about 15 minutes
before the game started," but was proud of their improvement through the day.
"The main thing is just to see them come out and have some fun, and do something
that benefits the community," he said.
Maybe it was cold, and maybe the plays weren't picture perfect, but everyone seemed to
agree that the second women's football tournament was a huge success. "I didn't really want to come out whenever I woke up, because it was so cold and
everything," McConnell said. "But now that I'm out here and we're really hot.
It's really fun and we're getting dirty and I love it."

Stan, The web is also an excellent place to purchase equipment for the outing, Stan. Based upon years of experience in not attending, I would recommend a complete new outfit for you:
(2) 80W Penn International Reels, spooled with 1,500 yards of 100 pound test.
(2) Aftco Custom Tuna Rods (wrapped in Delt purple, blue and green, of course).
(30) 120# Sampo Ball Bearing swivels.
(3) boxes 7/0 thru 9/0 xxx strength hooks.
(24) 40-pound Gouda Cheese wheels for bait.
One of the two fishing guides recommended for the area.
You can order all of this equipment at www.sportsman.com, or send cogo a check for $15,000 and he can supply with your accommodations.

Stan,
You will recall from your experience last year, fishing is more of an excuse to gather rather than a primary purpose of the trip. And if you actually expected a serious response to your request for help with the "where, when, how" of fishing, you must have completely forgotten your days in the clubhouse.
However, in true SoCal Delt fashion, it is very important to "look good" and have appropriate "gear". (Fishing has become somewhat similar to golf in this regard over the years.) I believe it must be a hold-over from the days of garnering those valuable "row points" at which the brothers of DTD excelled.
Your best source of information and possible assistance among the brothers is Hacker. He has always been the master of product research, you have geographic proximity to him, he appears to have an excellent command of the internet, sufficient funds to be dangerous and enthusiasm for the subject!
The easiest route would be to find your nearest Orvis authorized fishing tackle store. Immediately announce upon your arrival the Orvis shop that you have no fishing knowledge, a fishing trip already planned for the near future and (this is important!) be sure to let them know that cost is no object. They will take very good care of you.
The problem with the above solution however is that they will concentrate on fly fishing only. For maximum group participation and gross fish-weight-landed on the upcoming Duke Bros. et al Opening Day Fishing Trip you will do best with spinning tackle, preferably light to ultra light.
A good source of general fishing information re. the Eastern Sierra on the internet is - www.easternsierrafishing.com -. This site has an advice section located on the right hand side of your screen that includes advice on tackle. Your main concern is to get the rod, reel and line. You can obtain hooks, beer, weights, cigars, leader, booze, lures, wild women, bait etc. when we all arrive at the scene of the crimes (past, present and pending).
Looking forward to seeing you and hopefully many of our brothers in four weeks and two days!

Stan,
Listen to Cogo and me to get the REAL SCOOP!
None of this candy ass stuff from Freriks is worthy of a Stud like you. Leave fly fishing to light-in-the-loafer guys like Robert Redford and tree huggers.
And forget his advice on using "LIGHT" spinning tackle. Real Men use the big stuff! If its good enough for a world record Yellowfin Tuna or 1000 pound Marlin, it's plenty good for Sierra trout!

A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo, and when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole is maintained or even improved by the regular culling of the weakest members.
In much the same way, the human brain can operate only as fast as the slowest brain cells through which the electrical signals pass. Recent epidemiological studies have shown that while excessive intake of alcohol kills off brain cells, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. Thus, regular consumption of beer helps eliminate the weaker cells, constantly making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.
The result of this in-depth study verifies and validates the causal link between all-weekend parties and job-related performance. It also explains why, after a few short years of leaving a university and getting married, most professionals cannot keep up with the performance of the new graduates. Only those few that stick to the strict regimen of voracious alcoholic consumption can maintain the intellectual levels that they achieve during their college years.
So, this is a call to arms. As our country is constantly in danger of losing its technological edge, we must get as many people as possible back into the bars. Quaff that pint. Your company and country need you to be at your peak. Take life by the bottle and be all that you can be.

GraffitiBesides Goodflight and assorted P.B's, I should have dung y'all when I had a chance. The "Holy Grail" of Delta Piism is being attacked from many sides of late. I, being the only brother that has seen fit to share my early June days with you guys without missing a trip, now must share my consternation with the lack of DTD dedication I'm feeling and seeing. We shared swats, swill, skips, PB sandwiches,
Arnetta, Abbey's cookin', et al, and now we have to change the most sacred of weekends we have left in our lives. Say it ain't so, Pope. Oh? now he's dead.
What is this fascination with bicycles that is permeating the brotherhood? Bi-curious women I can understand. First slug to the gut was losing my beloved co-pilot to an ill-timed bicycle tour of Guisseppieland a year ago. Now, the brothers Laguna, feel another two-wheeled sweatfest is more important than our annual trout quest. They have the gall to pole our beloved brotherhood about changing dates. The automatic answer to their date change should have been "SEE YA NEXT YEAR." But nnnnoooooooooo, the Duke clan changes their date. Now Brownie is left without brotherly love.
As always, I'll be there. No problem; I will move my mother's funeral, my daughter's birthday, my wife's cancer surgery back a week to
accommodate these Lance Armstrong wannabes. And I'm sure, I will spend most of the last day alone at Big Bend, until you guys ride your tikes down from Walker. The beer will be cold, chips and dips ready, trout plentiful, magazines picturesque. Gentlemen, there are some traditions that can't be messed with.
All of ya, have a nice day.

GraffitiHere's a collection of recent
email reminisces about fishing at Lundy Lake:
- webguy:
Mike Freriks writes:
I recall a trip that included a visit to Lundy in the very early years when we still scheduled the event on the true “opening day” of the trout season. The Duke Brothers were in one boat and the Off Brothers were in another. The snow was down to the shoreline and the wind (as always at Lundy) was blowing hard and frigid. Fishing was fantastic as evidenced by a handsome stringer of trout attached to the Duke Brothers boat. However a sharp turn and too much slack in the stringer line caused the propeller to instantly transform the fish on the stringer to chum. Shortly thereafter while trolling along the south shoreline we heard in the distance the humming of the theme from the movie “The Vikings” as the Off Brothers boat appeared from a small bay hidden by a finger of land. They assumed ramming speed and headed right for us loaded with a large supply of snowballs that they launched in our direction.
Fishing the inlet stream to Lundy was always fun except for Brother Graham the time we left him stranded when he did not return to Meeker’s Suburban in time for the return to our base accommodations. Jimmy was not a happy camper and justifiably so. Hacker and I still vividly remember fishing that stream one afternoon when we chanced upon the campsite of a commie-pinko-hippie-freak and his girlfriend. She possessed a fabulous gift of bending over their campfire to “tend to the cooking” while exposing a magnificent derriere for our viewing pleasure. A fond memory Peter and I will never forget!
Gary Cogorno:
Correct me if I am wrong but when I hear Lundy all I can think of is the rear end of the bartenderess at Tom's Place. Are my remaining neurons misfiring?
Mike Freriks:
Gary, Your lack of cranial cooperation may be best explained by age, booze and the fact that most of our history at Lundy was in the early days of the trip.
Jon Esparza:
The only good thing about Lundy Lake is crossing the dam and walking the 4 miles up the mountain in October There is an old gold mine at the top along with two small lakes, with a stream between the lakes. In October, the stream becomes a trout aquarium. In the words of Jerry Lee Lewis, "there's a whole lot of spawning going on." You can catch trout very easily.
Mike Freriks:
Great observation Jon! Fall fishing in the Sierra is arguably the best and was always my favorite. Before we were able to escape the Peoples Republic of California I tried to take a solo trip each year after the summer crowds had departed and before the first big snowfall. I sometimes found myself with icicles forming on my line guides and my nose but it was always a beautiful experience. The solitude, the changing leaf colors of the deciduous trees, the crisp cold air………fabulous! And yes, the fishing is usually great!
